Working in Metals by Charles C. Sleffel

Horseshoe, shoe, toe calk, punch, borax, weld, welding, anciant technique,
NOTE
Forging a small spike to hold a piece of steel to a piece of iron is an ancient technique that has been lost in modern times. This method was used when "steeling" tools such as nail and bolt headers. The steel piece was forged into a tear drop shape and the point bent down. This point was driven into driven into a small tapered hole punched in the wrought iron. Thus no wire was needed to hold the steel firmly in place while the parts were heated and welded.
