Old Welder, That's a misnomer! The proper term would be Metal Fatigue.  The natural form of steel is 
crystaline.

The belief that steel crystalized then became weak and broke was a common belief that continued in the 1900's well after it had been proven false. This myth is found in many books printed in the 1800's and even the early 1900's

For heavy work cotton aprons are worn, not leather. Leather conducts heat too well and gets stiff at high heat. Cotton DOES occasionally catch fire. However, heavy cotton only smoulders unless it has a lot of frayed edges.

At a blacksmithing demo where heavy work was being done the demonstrator's cotton apron caught fire. A number of people in the audience tried to tell him. Finally he stopped and patted out the flames. Then said very grumpily from having his demonstration interrupted,
Don't you think I KNOW when I am on fire?

I couldn't get anything done if I dropped everything because of a little fire!
